Africa Tour : Here is a quick summary... Some friends who were joining Helge Pedersen on his Globeriders African Adventure ride convinced me I needed to join them on this tour of the southern part of African continent. It was hard to decline their invitation since the majority of the group were such good friends. I also did not think I could afford taking such a trip but somehow was able to get time off work and scrape up the money. The first of October I flew to Germany to attend Hechlingen BMW Enduro training. Five of us going to Africa attended this training and it was a fantastic experience. I highly recommend it to any GS rider. The class was a three day event and put you through a wide variety of exercises both on street and in the dirt. It was a great start to the trip and to met more international friends. I certainly enjoy people I meet abroad, a clean perspective of the goings-on in the world not like the tainted opinion of people of this country. It was an 11 hour flight from Germany to Cape Town. We were expecting to find our bikes in Cape Town, which did not happen. The shipping container was in Singapore! The shipping instructions were screwed up and we negotiated to have the bikes unloaded in Durban, South Africa. Durban is over 1000 miles north of Cape Town and we rented motorcycles to complete that stretch. One days ride from Durban we stopped for a bite to eat and saw the headlines of the local paper showing a container ship from Singapore burning in the Durban harbor. Yikes, this trip was not starting too well. However it turned out to be a different ship and our bikes were unloaded a day earlier. We saw amazing sights along the way. Our rides though South African townships were quite the experience, very friendly people in difficult situation. When we stopped we were met with curious, friendly people. Going up the Indian Ocean side of South Africa we saw Whales breaching on the coast, Ostrich running of the sides of the road. Up over the Transkei we rode through Bustling cities with not a single white face in the crowd, Kids dancing and cheering on the side of the road as we motored by. A storm was moving in and saw an incredible light
show as we traveled into the night. Out of Durban we ventured up to Lesotho via Sani Pass. The objective was to have a beer at the highest commercial pub in the world and to get a stamp in our passports from the highest international border post in the world. What a ride it was up that pass. There were many steep uphill hairpin corners. It reminded me of a dirt version of Trollstigen (Norway.) There was another pass that was 2000 feet higher than the top of Sani. So close at this point we rode up to the top of that one too stopping in a couple villages on the way. Once again very friendly people who invited us into their homes to talk and show us their way of life. We flew into the Okavango Delta for a four day Safari in the bush. An hour and a half flight to a dirt landing strip then jumped into some 4x4 land cruisers with open air bench seats in the back. This was to be one experience I will never forget. We got so close to all kinds of various wildlife; zebra, kudo, springbok, monkey, baboon, elephant, giraffe, lion, hippo, hyenas, alligator, leopard, various colorful birds and wild dogs (very rare sight). A couple days were spent hanging around Victoria Falls, micro-light flight over the falls, an elephant ride and an afternoon ride into Zimbabwe. This was the halfway point of the trip and we were to start heading east. Down the Caprivi Strip I encountered a heard of about 60-80 elephants crossing the road. It was taking a long time and they were lingering on the road so I decided to ride my motorcycle though the center of the group. The bull elephant closest to me seemed not to like my presence and did a little dance for my pleasure. I kept on the throttle and zipped through to the other side with no resistance from the heard. Once into Namibia and out on the coast we rode south. There were lots of sand roads and desolation in the north of the country. We stopped in Twyfelfontein to see the rock engravings and stay at the lodge. Helge led a small number of us on what he called a “Technical Ride” out to the Skeleton Coast. This was a fun GS ride though varying terrain with picturesque canyons, deep sand sections and a stop at Rhino Camp. The southern part of Namibia is more like South Africa. A couple of interesting stops there, one was a place called Sossusvlei and home of the worlds largest sand dunes; other was Ai-Ais Hot Springs and Fish River Canyon (Namibian Grand Canyon). I tried to ride my R80G/S into Sosssusvlei but the sand was too deep with many criss-crossing tracks left from 4x4’s going into the park. It was very hard to keep a forward moving direction in such conditions. We still had a long way to get back to Cape Town so I gave up to save my clutch. We rode into Cape Town after five weeks from starting the ride. Topped off the trip with a sail out in the ocean on a 66 foot sloop. I am back trying to adjust to riding on the right side of the road, remembering
what day it is and recalling how much I hate my job. I still have a job here (Boeings) :^o
